Edward Partridge converted to the Church in December 1830 and became its first bishop in February 1831.2 He was asked to administer the law of consecration to the Saints and he oversaw land distribution and stewardship in Missouri. Partridge endured mob violence, including being tarred and feathered in 1833 in front of the courthouse in Independence, Missouri. He later fled to Clay and Caldwell counties but continued to fulfill his duties as bishop and serve missions for the Church.3
