“And it shall come to pass that I, the Lord God, will send one mighty and strong, holding the scepter of power in his hand, clothed with light for a covering, whose mouth shall utter words, eternal words; while his bowels shall be a fountain of truth, to set in order the house of God, and to arrange by lot the inheritances of the saints whose names are found, and the names of their fathers, and of their children, enrolled in the book of the law of God.” — Doctrine and Covenants 85:71
In Doctrine and Covenants 85:7-8, the Lord spoke of sending "one mighty and strong" to set in order the house of God and arrange inheritances.1 This prophecy, given through Joseph Smith, was part of a November 27, 1832 letter to William W. Phelps due to disagreements over the consecration of property in Missouri. Despite his initial opposition, Partridge repented, and the severe judgment predicted did not befall him.2
In 1834, Oliver Cowdery said that Joseph had clarified that the prophecy was not about any specific person, but served as a caution.2 In 1905 the First Presidency released a statement that this prophecy was specific to early Church circumstances and any future fulfillment would be orderly and under divine appointment.3
