“There shall be no greater, in this generation, for the Lord shall reveal unto the Seer of Israel, and he shall declare it.” — Joseph Smith1

Sidney Rigdon was born on February 19, 1793, in St. Clair Township, Pennsylvania, and was a Baptist and Campbellite preacher before Parley P. Pratt introduced him to the Book of Mormon. After reading the Book of Mormon, Rigdon traveled to New York to meet Joseph Smith and was baptized in November 1830.2 He quickly became a close associate and counselor to Joseph. Rigdon was instrumental in the establishment of the Church in Ohio and played a significant role in the early missionary efforts and the gathering of converts.3
