In 1829, Joseph Smith, who was just 23 years old at the time, underwent a significant transformation. During this period, he received both the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods through divine beings.¹ He was also given the title of Apostle and entrusted with the keys for the 'dispensation of the gospel for the last times; and for the fullness of times.'² Very shortly, Joseph would complete the translation and printing of the Book of Mormon,³ establish the first branch of the Church of Jesus Christ,⁴ and send missionaries to spread the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.⁵ He was sustained as the "First Elder" of the church on April 6th, 1830.⁶
