In 1829, Joseph Smith, who was just 23 years old at the time, underwent a significant transformation. During this period, he received both the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods through divine beings.1 He was also given the title of Apostle and entrusted with the keys for the 'dispensation of the gospel for the last times; and for the fullness of times.'2 Very shortly, Joseph would complete the translation and printing of the Book of Mormon,3 establish the first branch of the Church of Jesus Christ,4 and send missionaries to spread the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.5 He was sustained as the "First Elder" of the church on April 6th, 1830.6
