"I looked up, and beheld the same messenger standing over my head, surrounded by light as before. He then again related unto me all that he had related to me the previous night, and commanded me to go to my father and tell him of the vision and commandments which I had received." — Joseph Smith Jr.1
The morning after the three visitations from the Angel Moroni, Joseph Smith Jr. was working in the field with his father. His father noticed how weak Joseph seemed and, assuming the boy was sick, sent him home. Still exhausted, Joseph didn't make it and collapsed while climbing over a fence.2
As Joseph lay there, Moroni appeared again. He gave the same message as the night before and told Joseph to go back to his father and tell him of all that had happened. Joseph Smith Sr. believed his son and advised Joseph Jr. to do as Moroni commanded.3
Following his father's advice, Joseph went to the place Moroni had shown him. He attempted to retrieve the plates but was told he could not take them yet. Instead, Moroni instructed Joseph to return to this spot each year until it was the right time.4
