After Joseph Smith’s death, the Quorum of the Twelve was sustained to lead the Church, with Brigham Young as president. He began preparing the Saints to leave Nauvoo and look to the west for their new home. Brigham oversaw the completion of the Nauvoo Temple and helped members receive their endowments before traveling west. He assured them that through covenantal unity, God would provide the means to establish a new Zion in the Rocky Mountains.2
