Wilford Woodruff was ordained an apostle in April 1839.2 In July of that year, Woodruff witnessed Joseph Smith healing the sick during a malaria outbreak among the Saints and, following instructions from Joseph, healed others by using a red silk handkerchief.3 The following year, Woodruff arrived in England as a missionary, where he baptized hundreds of people.2,4 Upon returning to Nauvoo, he assisted in leading the Church and was made a member of the Council of Fifty.2
