“Convenient to the village of Manchester, Ontario county, New York, stands a hill of considerable size, and the most elevated of any in the neighborhood.” — Joseph Smith Jr.1
After his visitations from the Angel Moroni, Joseph went to the Hill Cumorah to find the golden plates. This hill, also known as the "Gold Bible Hill,"2 was located close to his home and near Manchester County.1 It was on the west side of the hill, not far from the summit, where Joseph found the golden plates.3
Joseph was not allowed to take the plates this time or for several years. He finally retrieved the plates on September 22, 1827,5 a day that coincided with the Jewish Feast of Trumpets, the day when Jews around the world celebrate the symbolic beginning of Israel's final gathering.6
Today, the Hill Cumorah is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.7
