“[McLellin] took an active part with the mob in Missouri, in robbing and driving the Saints. At the time Joseph Smith was in prison, he and others robbed Joseph's house and stable of the following property.” — Millennial Star1
William McLellin was baptized August 20, 1831 by Hyrum Smith. He was ordained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on February 15, 1835.2 During the conflicts in Missouri, and after he was excommunicated, McLellin betrayed Joseph Smith and participated in robbing the Smith home while Joseph was in jail. McLellin stole jewelry, bedclothes, linen, books, and other valuable items from Joseph's house, leaving Emma Smith and her children with little to keep them warm during the harsh winter. Despite the theft, Emma received help from other church members so she could provide for Joseph's needs in prison.3 McLellin also sought permission from the sheriff to fight the imprisoned Joseph. The prophet consented as long as his shackles were removed, to which McLellin requested the use of a club. The fight was ultimately avoided because the sheriff would not allow them to fight on unequal terms.1
