“I prayed, and while praying was filled with the Spirit and broke out in an unknown tongue to the astonishment of all present. This was the first time the Prophet Joseph had ever heard any one speak in an unknown tongue, as soon as I closed, Joseph arose and said ‘Brethren, I shall never oppose anything that comes from the Lord, that tongue is from God and I know it, for I asked the Lord to show me what it was, and he has shown me it is by his gift and power. ” — Brigham Young1
After sharing a meal with Joseph Smith and others, Brigham Young participated in a small meeting where he was invited to pray. During his prayer, he felt compelled by the Spirit to speak in an unknown language,2 a gift of the Spirit known as speaking in tongues (talked about in 1 Corinthians 12).3
Joseph Smith reassured the group that this came from God. Joseph then spoke in the same language, identifying it as the language Adam had spoken in the Garden of Eden. He encouraged the Saints to seek the gift of tongues, as the Apostle Paul had.2
