“I have a father, brothers, children, and friends who have gone to a world of spirits. They are only absent for a moment. They are in the spirit, and we shall soon meet again. The time will soon arrive when the trumpet shall sound. When we depart, we shall hail our mothers, fathers, friends, and all whom we love, who have fallen asleep in Jesus. There will be no fear of mobs, persecutions, or malicious lawsuits and arrests; but it will be an eternity of felicity.” — Joseph Smith1
In April 1830, Emma Smith gave birth to twins who passed away soon after birth. At the same time, Julia Murdock, wife of John Murdock, gave birth to twins (Joseph and Julia) and died soon thereafter. Joseph and Emma adopted the Murdock twins2 and took them to the Johnson home in Hiram, Ohio.3 While living there, Joseph was attacked by a mob. After this attack, Julia and Joseph became sick, and although Julia began to recover, Joseph died of the illness.3
