Joseph went to work for Josiah Stowell in 1825, helping to look for Spanish silver believed to be in the Ouaquaga mountains. Stowell hired Joseph because he'd heard the young man had a gift for using seer stones. The group of treasure seekers never found anything, and Joseph tried to convince Josiah to call off the search.2
