“[They are] called and chosen and it is appointed unto [them] to receive [their] endowment in Kirtland with power from on high.” — Frederick G. Williams1

In a council of High Priests held in Missouri and led by Joseph Smith, several elders were chosen by revelation to go to Kirtland, Ohio, and receive endowments of power in the temple.2 Those selected included Isaac Morley, John Corrill, John Whitmer, David Whitmer, A. Sidney Gilbert, Peter Whitmer Jr., Simeon Carter, Newel Knight, Thomas B. Marsh, Lyman Wight, Parley P. Pratt, Christian Whitmer, and Solomon Hancock. Their primary responsibilities were to gather the strength of the Lord’s house and proclaim the gospel. Additionally, Edward Partridge was instructed to receive his endowment and continue his duties as bishop.1 William W. Phelps was assigned to assist with the printing establishment in Kirtland. A. Sidney Gilbert passed away before making the trip to Kirtland. Frederick G. Williams served as the council’s clerk, recording these instructions and assignments.1 The Kirtland Temple was eventually dedicated in March 1836, with most of the men in attendance. Numerous Saints testified of the great spiritual manifestations they witnessed at the dedication.2
