Samuel Harrison Smith was born on March 13, 1808, in Tunbridge, Vermont. He moved to Palmyra, New York with the rest of the Smith family.1 He was initially a Presbyterian but converted to the Latter-day Saint faith in 1829 after visiting his brother Joseph in Pennsylvania.2 He became the third person baptized into the church and was one of the Eight Witnesses who saw and handled the gold plates.3 In June 1830, Samuel was ordained an Elder and began his missionary work.4 His mission included carrying copies of the Book of Mormon in a knapsack and preaching the gospel.5 He introduced the Book of Mormon to John P. Greene's family, including Greene's brother-in-law Brigham Young.6
