“Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions.” — Ezekiel 37:161
E. B. Grandin, a printer based in Palmyra, New York, printed the initial run of 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon. This 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was bound in a luxurious calf leather.2 Before printing, Oliver Cowdery copied the manuscript of the initial translation for the printer to ensure that it could not be lost through theft or alteration, and John Gilbert added punctuation to the printer's manuscript.3
In this edition, Joseph included a preface addressing the loss of the first 116 pages of the Book of Mormon translation. He also added the testimonies of the Three Witnesses and the Eight Witnesses were located at the end of the book.4 Copies of the book were sold for $1.25 each.5
